Calcium gluconate

Code ATC: А12АА03

Pharmacotherapeutic group

Pharmacological properties

Calcium ions are involved in transmission of nerve impulses, contraction of smooth and skeletal muscles, functioning myocardium, blood coagulation; they are necessary for bone formation, functioning other systems and organs. Concentration of calcium ions in blood is decreased in many pathological processes, and severe hypocalcemia promotes an appearance of tetany. Calcium gluconate, except removing hypocalcemia, reduces vascular permeability, has anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, and hemostatic effect. In contrast to calcium chloride, it has weaker local irritating effect, therefore it may be used for intramuscular and subcutaneous introduction.

Indications for use

Calcium gluconate is used in case of insufficient function of parathyroid glands, enhanced excretion of calcium from the body (particularly, in prolonged dehydration), as adjuvant for allergic diseases (serum sickness, urticaria, angioedema, etc.), and allergic complications of drug therapy, to reduce vascular permeability in pathological processes of various origins (exudative phase of inflammatory process, anaphylactoid purpura, radiation sickness, etc.); in parenchymatous hepatitis, toxic liver damage, nephritis, eclampsia, hyperkalemia, hyperkalemic form of paroxysmal myoplegia, in skin disorders (itching, eczema, psoriasis, etc.), as hemostatic agent, as well as an antidote for poisoning by salts of magnesium, oxalic acid or it’s soluble salts, soluble salts of fluoride acid.
